And guess what? I’m one of the authors. Michelle Griep, who writes historical romance with a hearty dose of adventure and intrigue. I’ve got lots of books in the Regency and Victorian era in England, and a few during the Colonial period in America.

My recent release is Lost in Darkness, an enchanting Regency-Era gothic romance intertwined with inspiration from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Here’s a blurb:

Even if there be monsters, there is none so fierce as that which resides in man’s own heart.

Travel writer Amelia Balfour’s dream of touring Egypt is halted when she receives news of a revolutionary new surgery for her grotesquely disfigured brother. This could change everything, and it does. . .in the worst possible way.

Surgeon Graham Lambert has suspicions about the doctor he’s gone into practice with, but he can’t stop him from operating on Amelia’s brother. Will he be too late to prevent the man’s death? Or to reveal his true feelings for Amelia before she sails to Cairo?

One of my favorite things about writing a book is doing the historical research. Now that’s a scavenger hunt! Here’s one of the prize pieces of information I came across and incorporated into the story.

Victorian Physicians, Surgeons and Apothecaries…What’s the Difference?

Physicians were the only doctors to receive medical degrees, usually via a classical education at Oxford or Cambridge. These are the learned men, the ones who were required to read both Latin and Greek texts. But the one thing their studies did not include was hands-on experience. Strange, eh? Not really. Physicians didn’t bother themselves with physically caring for a patient. They might give diagnoses, prescribe treatment, and even do some bloodletting, but other than that, they wouldn’t stoop to such manual labor. Because of this, physicians were considered gentlemen, often invited to dine with the families they visited or spend the night as guests. They were also given the address of Dr.

Next in the medical hierarchy is the surgeon. While this man didn’t command as much societal respect, this is the fellow you’d really want to call when you needed some hands-on care. A surgeon was able to not only perform surgery but deal with other illnesses, teeth pulling, treating wounds, and skin disease. A surgeon was trained through an internship or an apprenticeship with an established doctor. They were always addressed as Mr.

An apothecary was someone who could give medical advice and prescribe medicine, but physically treating patients wasn’t usually one of their tasks. This was considered a trade sort of job, so lower still on society’s ranking. Often a surgeon might also be an apothecary, doing double-duty.

In my new release, Lost in Darkness, the hero is a surgeon. He is referred to as a doctor, but never addressed with the title of Dr.
